General Questions
Best Time to Visit
Tulips are very sensitive to weather and emerge when the ground has defrosted. Some emerge early, at the end of March, while others wait until later in April when the ground is warmer. Generally speaking, mid-April typically has the best overlap of color between the early, mid, and late blooming tulips. This is what we refer to as “peak bloom.”
If you would like to see how the tulip fields are progressing, please visit our Bloom Status page, or social media. We post updates and photos often during the growing season.
What to Wear
The majority of our farm is grass, gravel, and dirt. This is an outdoor event in an agricultural field with uneven walking surfaces. Be prepared for unpredictable weather, muddy fields, and pathways. The event will remain open during inclement weather. We are open rain or shine! Please dress warmly and bring waterproof shoes, as spring in Oregon can be unpredictable, and rain may mean extra mud. Dress in layers and pack a hat, gloves, scarf, raincoat and umbrella. Tulips are a spring flower that loves the cooler temperatures and rain, so we gladly meet them where they are.
For an update and images of current field conditions, visit our Bloom Status page
Dogs & Pets at the Festival
Can’t bear to leave your furry friend at home? We welcome pets to accompany you during your visit! Please always keep your pet on a leash and clean up after them. Be mindful and respect the other visitors, other pets, and tulips! Note: pets are not allowed on tour vehicles nor to remain in vehicles unattended.
Photography & Filming
General notes on photography & filming at the Tulip Festival
We welcome photographers to our farm at no additional cost above the cost of regular festival admission. Photographers are encouraged to purchase a Season Pass to take advantage of changing lighting and weather conditions throughout the day and the entire season.
Note to all: Please stay on paths, follow the wide grass walkways, avoid stepping over or through the tulip rows, do not pick the tulips, and be courteous to other photographers and guests.

On the Farm
Accessibility
We strive to make our farm accessible to all. We offer designated parking, wheelchair-friendly areas, and accessible restrooms. Full accessibility is often determined by weather, durability of your wheelchair or device, and its ability to navigate farm conditions. Please note that there are times, with our wet spring weather, that the fields are not accessible to wheelchairs due to heavy rain.
When you arrive, please advise the gate of your parking needs so they may direct you accordingly. Once you have parked at either of our parking lots, our guests with accessibility concerns may find it easier to get around the farm by utilizing our complimentary shuttle that runs continuously from the main building and the field tent areas. It does require a step to get on-board.
In addition, we will be offering (for purchase on-site only) a senior and accessibility field tour, weather permitting. For a small fee, you can enjoy a 30-minute riding tour through the fields and learn about farm history and see the fields up close. It does require a step to get on-board. Tickets can be purchased on-site at our field tent.
Please bring your own wheelchair or walker, if needed, as we do not offer them on-site.
If you have specific needs or questions regarding accessibility, we encourage you to contact us in advance so we can make every effort to assist you. Please reach out to us at info@woodenshoe.com. We are committed to continuously improving accessibility and ensuring all guests have a safe and enjoyable experience at our farm.
Farm Layout
The position of our tulip fields rotates annually, differing the length between the tulips and the paved/graveled areas.
From the front parking lot: Guests will find a large, paved patio area with seating and flowerpots. The patio is a short distance from parking… it is in front of the main building where the Gift Shop, Wine Tasting Room, Flower Market, Tulip Café coffee counter and Office are located. The shuttle departs/drops off at the Office-end of the patio. At the other end of the patio, across the stone path, is our 4-acre garden used for weddings and special events in the summer. You are welcome to explore the garden and picnic there if you wish.
From the back parking lot: Guests will find the Field Tent area where the windmill, display gardens, steam tractor demonstrations (weekends), and the Field Tent retail store are located. The 30-minute Field Tour can be purchased at the Field Tent. This lot typically has the shortest distance to the tulip fields. It is also the furthest from our main food vendor and craft vendor area.
Located between these two areas you may enjoy a variety of food vendors, crafters market booths, and kids’ activities. We have open air table seating throughout for you to enjoy a beverage, meal, or snack. Some tables are located under a shaded tent while others are uncovered. Please note that tables are not available for reservations.
Our brightly painted benches are located throughout the farm for your comfort.
Shuttle vs. Senior/Accessibility Tour
Shuttle: Once you have parked at either of our parking lots, our guests with accessibility concerns may find it easier to get around the farm by utilizing our complimentary shuttle that runs continuously from the main building and the field tent areas. It does require a step to get on-board.
Senior/Accessibility Tour: This is an onsite add-on option. We offer a scenic 30-minute ride through the tulip fields, designed for those who prefer not to walk the terrain and might find navigating the farm more challenging. It does require a step to get onboard. This narrated journey offers a glimpse into the farm’s history and stunning photo opportunities. The ride is offered daily/hourly from 10am – 5pm, weather permitting. Tickets are first-come-first-served, purchased on site at the Field Tent.
On-Site Payment
We accept all major forms of payment, including credit and debit cards, cash, mobile payments, and contactless options. Whether you prefer Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, Apple Pay, Google Pay, or cash, we’ve got you covered!
Our vendors may have limited forms of payment.
Food & Drink
We have food options every day with a few extra vendors on weekends, but families are welcome to use our picnic tables and bring their own food and non-alcoholic beverages. Outside water bottles are welcome and encouraged; please bring your own water as filling stations are not available. See our festival activity pages for a list of vendors. We also sell local beer and Wooden Shoe Vineyards estate grown wine in our tasting room. Outside alcohol of any kind is prohibited. If your family has any allergies or food restrictions, we suggest bringing your own picnic. Please note that tables and areas cannot be reserved during the festival.
Restrooms
Our farm provides portable restrooms, including handwashing stations and accessible stalls, for your convenience. As we operate on a septic system without sewer access, traditional restrooms are not available. We appreciate your understanding and hope you enjoy your time on the farm.
Smoking & Vaping
For the safety and comfort of all guests, smoking, vaping, and e-cigarette use are not permitted within event areas but are allowed in designated outdoor smoking areas.
Tulip & Bulb Information
Picking Tulips
Picking tulips is not allowed on our farm. With all the visitors we would soon have no flowers and for the health of the crop we do not allow the picking of our tulips. The tulip plant is a single stem from the bulb that has one flower and leaves, all on the one stem. When you pick a tulip flower with some leaves you take away the food for the new bulb. Picking flowers reduces the size of the bulb and may even kill the bulb if all the foliage is removed. Our flowers are picked in the bud stage, leaving the base leaf so the plant starts putting its energy back to the bulb rather than the flower.
Purchasing Bulbs
All of the bulbs are in the ground and blooming during the tulip festival. Bulbs can be ordered for Fall pick up or delivery.
We have complimentary catalogs available on-site… please take one! Guests can spend time wandering the tulip fields and display beds, matching flowers to our bulb catalog, and ordering their favorites. You may order bulbs during your visit, and we will ship them to you in the fall at planting time. Or you may pick up your order here in the fall, in our Gift Shop. We will email you when your order is ready. Please be sure to indicate on your order form which option you prefer.
If you forget to place your order while you are here… please visit our website store where you can view bulb varieties and place your order. Please order early for the best selection, while supplies last. Care instructions provided.
If you would like to take bulbs home with you, consider purchasing our potted tulips. You can enjoy the flowers through the spring and after they die down, they can be repotted or replanted in the fall.
Fresh Cut Flowers & Potted Tulips
Tulips are available for purchase onsite from mid-March to late-April (dates vary depending on weather). We have fresh cut tulips and potted tulips available for purchase. Both options make great gifts. While supplies last. Care instructions provided.
Fresh cut tulips are 10 stems per bouquet. Color choices depend on the time of year and the weather. We pick tulips at a closed bud stage before they open, by the time they are blooming in the field it is too late to pick them.
Potted tulips are available for purchase on-site. Small pots contain about 6-8 bulbs of shorter-variety tulips and the large pots contain 30-50 bulbs depending on the variety of spring bulbs. The bulbs in the potted tulips can be transferred to another pot or the ground in the fall. Pots are available for pick-up or will-call by emailing office@woodenshoe.com. Please note: we are not able to ship potted tulips.
What do you do with the tulips after they are finished blooming?
After the flowers have bloomed, we remove the seed pod and any petals. This is called topping. When growing tulips for bulbs, topping happens just as the tulips are almost to full bloom. This is so all the energy of the plant goes into making a bigger bulb and flower for the following year, not seed. As a side note, you can grow tulips from seed, it takes about 6 or 7 years to get a flower.
How many tulips are in your fields?
We have an estimated 5-8 million tulip bulbs planted in our fields.
